40 m of LED strip for a living room: everything you need to buy, with UAE prices (24V vs 12V, drivers, feed points, profiles)

Buying 40 m of living-room LED strip in the UAE? Compare 24V and 12V, feed points, drivers and dimmers, with AED prices for the full kit.

Quick answer: For 40 m of living-room strip, use 24V, feed each run from both ends, and split the load across several drivers and dimmers. Recorded UAE prices for 24V COB strip run from about AED 10.6 to AED 163 per metre, so 40 m of strip costs roughly AED 424 to AED 6,520 before drivers, dimmers and cabling. Each 400W LED-rated rotary dimmer starts from AED 379.50.

Forty metres is a long run, and in a UAE villa living room it is common once you cover coves, shelves and a feature ceiling. The question is not just what to buy but how to wire it so the light is even from the first metre to the last.

Why 24V, not 12V

Voltage drop is the main reason long runs look patchy. Published measurements show a 5 m 24V strip dropping from 23.39V at the start to 22.12V at the end, a 5.4% drop. A 5 m 12V strip went from 11.82V to 10.03V, a 15.1% drop. Voltage drop rises as the current in the wire increases, so higher-wattage strips suffer more. The rule of thumb is simple: runs over 10 m should use 24V.

Feed points: the part most people miss

Feed points matter more than the strip itself. The maximum run depends on wattage per metre and whether you power it from one side or both:

Strip (24V)One sideBoth sides
9.6W/m7 m14 m
14.4W/m5 m10 m
19.2W/m3 m6 m

Total load is wattage per metre multiplied by length. Forty metres at 9.6W/m is 384W, at 14.4W/m it is 576W, and at 19.2W/m it is 768W.

In practice, 40 m needs:

  • 9.6W/m: three segments (14 m + 14 m + 12 m), each fed from both ends, so six feed points.
  • 14.4W/m: four segments of 10 m, so eight feed points.
  • 19.2W/m: seven segments of about 6 m, so fourteen feed points.

Feed points also set your cable choice. A 10W 24V load can run 26 m on 20AWG wire with voltage drop under 3%, and 16AWG extends that to 65 m. On 12V, the same 10W load on 20AWG is limited to 5.5 m. Strips with 2 oz copper limit voltage drop, and 3 oz copper suits higher-power strips.

Using several power supplies placed close to each section is also recommended for brightness on long runs.

Profiles and heat

A profile does two jobs: it protects the strip and gives a neat finish in a cove or shelf. UAE ceiling voids run hot, so choose a profile that helps spread heat and keep drivers ventilated rather than buried in insulation.

Drivers and dimmers

Size drivers to the load on each section, not to the total for the room. Driver prices were not in our recorded pricing, so request current quotes for the wattage and quantity you need.

Dimmers are where most budgets go wrong. Every dimmer in our comparison is rated at 400W, and 384W on one dimmer leaves no headroom. Split the room into at least two zones, such as ceiling coves and shelving, each on its own dimmer.

  • Heritage Brass Vintage Range Rustic Nickel 3 Gang Dimmer (XRN.280.400): a 3-gang TED dimmer, compatible with LED lamps, at AED 892.80 excluding VAT. Delivery is within 3–4 weeks. It suits a three-zone design and a classic finish.
  • ABB 400W 1G Rotary Dimmer (stainless steel): AED 379.50 at Plaza Middle East. It suits single-zone control where you want one dimmer per zone.

Whichever you choose, confirm it is rated for LED loads. Trailing-edge rotary dimmers are designed for LED, while leading-edge models are meant for inductive loads.

Your 40 m shopping list

  • Strip: 24V, all from one batch, at the wattage that gives the brightness you want (lower W/m means longer runs per feed).
  • Drivers: one per section, sized to that section's watts with headroom, placed close to the strip and ventilated.
  • Cable: gauge chosen for the distance from driver to strip.
  • Profiles: aluminium profiles with diffusers for coves and shelves.
  • Dimmers: LED-rated, at least two zones, each under its rated load.
