Neon flex for a pergola or garden in the UAE: voltage, IP65, dimming, feed points and cost

Neon flex for a UAE pergola: why 24V and IP65 suit long runs, feed points from both ends, safe dimming and realistic AED costs.

Quick answer: For a long pergola run in the UAE, choose 24V IP65 neon flex and power it from both ends so the light stays even along the frame. Listed flex prices start at about AED 35 to 39 per metre, though UAE prices are usually higher, so budget for the dimmer and power supplies separately.

If you want a warm line of light tracing the beams or edge of a pergola or garden wall, neon flex is one of the simplest ways to do it. Getting it right depends on three things: the voltage, how far the light runs from each power point, and how the flex is powered and dimmed. Here is how our specialists approach an outdoor run in the UAE.

Why 24V suits a long pergola run

Voltage drop is the main reason a pergola run can look patchy. Light fades along the strip as the voltage falls. In one test, a 5-metre 12V strip measured 11.82V at the start and 10.03V at the end, a drop of 15.1%. A 5-metre 24V strip of similar length measured 23.39V at the start and 22.12V at the end, a drop of 5.4%.

Voltage drop increases as the current in the wire increases. Because of this, 12V strips lose voltage faster than 24V strips, and runs over 10 metres are best served by 24V. A pergola perimeter often passes that length, so 24V is our default starting point for outdoor frames.

Why IP65 for outdoor use

IP65 neon flex is sold as waterproof and suitable for outdoor use. Under a pergola in the UAE, it will face dust, sand and splashes from watering, so an IP65 rating is the right baseline for any exposed run. Keep the power supply and connections in a protected, ventilated enclosure rather than out in direct sun, where heat can shorten the life of electronics.

Feed points: power from both ends

The maximum run depends on the strip's wattage per metre and whether it is powered from one side or both. For 24V strips in the 2835L range:

  • 9.6W/m: up to 7 metres from one side, or 14 metres from both sides.
  • 14.4W/m: up to 5 metres from one side, or 10 metres from both sides.
  • 19.2W/m: up to 3 metres from one side, or 6 metres from both sides.

Feeding from both ends roughly doubles the reach, which is why it suits a rectangular frame. A 12-metre run at 9.6W/m is 115.2 watts in total (length multiplied by wattage per metre), and it would be too long for one feed point but works well fed from both ends. Higher-output flex needs shorter runs even with two feeds, so choose the lowest wattage that gives the brightness you want.

For long runs, using several power supplies placed close to the strip sections also improves brightness. Ask for the copper weight too: 2 oz copper is recommended to limit voltage drop, and 3 oz for higher-power strips.

Dimming safely

Dimming outdoor flex should always be planned around the total load. Check three things:

  1. Load rating. Make sure the dimmer or actuator is rated for LED and for the total wattage on each channel. For example, a 4-channel universal dimming actuator is rated at 250W/VA per channel, which comfortably carries a 115W pergola run on one channel.
  2. Dimmer type. Universal (LED-compatible) dimming actuators are the correct choice for LED flex. Some products also offer manual override, which is useful if a smart controller fails.
  3. Scene control. If you want voice control of your lighting scenes, KNX devices need a bridge or gateway to connect to assistants such as Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The assistant sends the command to the bridge, which activates the KNX scene, so the automation stays on the KNX system.

Colour rendering under a pergola

If the pergola is a dining or lounge space, the colour quality of the light matters as much as the brightness. For homes, a CRI (Ra) of 90 or above is a sensible minimum, and R9 should be above 50 where skin, food and timber are seen. A fixture can advertise a CRI of 90 and still have a weak R9, which makes skin tones look flat. Check both figures on the spec sheet.

What it costs in AED

These are the market prices we recorded. Non-UAE sellers are estimates, and UAE prices are usually higher.

ItemPriceNote
ELMARK LED Neon Flex 12W/m 24V IP65 RGBAED 39.29 per metreEstimate, international seller, incl. tax

As an example, a 12-metre run of the ELMARK flex at the estimated rate comes to about AED 471. That covers the flex only, before power supplies, dimmer, wiring and installation.

What this means for your home

  • Measure the full perimeter of the pergola or garden run before you order.
  • Choose 24V and IP65 for any outdoor section, with a lower wattage for longer runs.
  • Plan a feed point at both ends of runs longer than the single-side limit.
  • Size the power supplies and dimmer channels to the total wattage, with headroom.
  • Confirm stock and final UAE pricing before you design around a specific product.
