The decision that sets whether your devices talk to each other for a decade.
A protocol is the language devices use. There's no single best — it depends on open walls, home size and reliability vs cost.
| Protocol | Wiring | Best for | Reliability | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KNX | Wired bus | New builds, villas, whole-home | Very high | $$$ |
| Lutron (Clear Connect) | Wireless RF (pro) | Premium lighting/shading | Very high | $$$ |
| Zigbee | Wireless mesh | Retrofit, sensors, bulbs | High | $ |
| Z-Wave | Wireless mesh | Retrofit, less congestion | High | $ |
| Wi-Fi | Wireless | A few devices, quick wins | Medium | $ |
| Matter / Thread | Wireless mesh | Cross-brand future-proofing | High (improving) | $–$$ |
Wired (KNX / Lutron HomeWorks): rock-solid, villa-scale, no Wi-Fi dependence. Needs cabling, so only for open walls. Five figures.
Wireless (Zigbee / Z-Wave / Matter-over-Thread): retrofit-friendly, far cheaper, good now. Large homes can strain the mesh.
Walls are open — lock in reliability and scale now. Retrofitting this later costs far more.
No demolition. Start with lighting and sensors, expand room by room.
Matter lets devices from different brands interoperate — the antidote to app sprawl.
For a handful of bulbs or a lock, Wi-Fi is the least-effort start. Don't build a whole home on it.
A closed brand without Matter; a big villa on Wi-Fi only; wired after walls close. Decide the protocol before the first device.
No brand pays for placement here.
Send a floor plan; we recommend the protocol, with a full BOQ.
